UTM Campaign URL Builder
Build clean campaign URLs with UTM parameters — live generation, presets, and naming hygiene built in.
A naming convention that survives contact with reality
Clean reports come from consistent naming, not clever tags. Four rules cover almost everything:
- Lowercase everything. Email, EMAIL and email are three traffic sources to GA4. One convention, enforced by habit or by the toggle above.
- Use hyphens, not spaces. utm_campaign=spring-sale-2026 stays readable and never needs encoding.
- Be specific where it pays. Source is the platform (google, facebook, newsletter). Medium is the channel type (cpc, email, social). Campaign ties them to an initiative (spring-launch).
- Keep a shared reference. Teams drift. A short internal doc listing approved sources and mediums prevents most reporting chaos.
Presets fill sensible defaults for each channel — adjust them freely before generating. Nothing leaves your browser: history is kept locally and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign are the core three and should always be filled: source says who sent the traffic (newsletter, linkedin), medium says what kind of channel it was (email, cpc, social), and campaign names the promotion. utm_term and utm_content are optional extras for paid keywords and creative variants.
Does capitalization matter in UTM values?
Yes. Analytics treats utm values as case-sensitive, so Newsletter and newsletter appear as two different rows in your reports. Pick one convention — lowercase is the most common — and apply it everywhere. The lowercase toggle enforces this automatically.
Will my existing query parameters survive?
Yes. This builder appends UTM parameters after any existing query string, so a destination like /offer?variant=blue keeps its original parameter and gains the utm_ parameters alongside it.
Can I use spaces in UTM values?
Avoid them. Spaces must be percent-encoded, and some platforms mangle encoded spaces. Use hyphens or underscores instead — spring_sale rather than "spring sale". The builder converts spaces to hyphens when hygiene mode is on.
Should I tag internal links with UTMs?
No. Adding UTM parameters to links inside your own site overwrites the original session attribution — a visitor who arrived from Google Ads gets re-attributed to whatever internal campaign they clicked. Only tag inbound links from external placements.
