Honest expectations for FAQ markup

FAQPage structured data gives machines an unambiguous, machine-readable statement of your questions and answers. What it cannot do is force a visual treatment: Google currently reserves its expandable FAQ accordion largely for authority sites, while AI search engines (AI Overviews, ChatGPT-style assistants) routinely draw on well-structured FAQ content regardless. Ship it because it makes your content legible — treat any visual enhancement as a bonus.

What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is JSON-LD structured data (the FAQPage type from schema.org) that describes a list of questions and answers on a page in a format machines parse reliably. Search engines and AI systems use it to understand that the content is Q&A shaped, and it feeds eligibility for enhanced presentations of your answers.
Will this markup guarantee FAQ rich results in Google?
No — and be wary of any generator that implies otherwise. Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites. For everyone else the markup still matters: it structures your content for indexing and for AI search engines that quote answers directly. Valid markup is necessary, never sufficient.
Do the questions need to be visible on the page?
Yes. Structured data must reflect content users can actually see. Marking up hidden Q&A violates Google’s structured-data guidelines and undermines trust in everything else you mark up. Generate the schema from the same pairs you display — the reverse workflow works too.
How many Q&A pairs should a page have?
As many as genuinely belong there — typically four to eight. Two complete pairs are the practical minimum for the data to make sense. Every pair should earn its place: real questions customers ask, answered concisely.
Where do I paste the generated code?
Insert the script block into the head of the HTML page, or just before the closing body tag. On WordPress a custom-HTML block or an SEO plugin’s header-code field works. After publishing, validate the live URL with Google’s Rich Results Test.
